While there is a seemingly never-ending supply of information online, it can be difficult to wade through to get the facts—which can lead to making confused and uninformed choices.

This is why we talk openly about abortion—because we want you to have all the facts so that you can make an educated decision about how to move forward.

Read on to learn the essentials you need to know about abortion. Or contact our office to learn more about your options and ask questions in a safe, nonjudgmental space.

Not Every Woman Is Eligible for Every Abortion Procedure

Did you know that medical abortion, also known as the “abortion pill,” is only FDA-approved if your pregnancy is 10 weeks gestation or under? If your pregnancy is further along, you aren’t eligible for a medical abortion.

You’re also ineligible for medical abortion if any of the following situations apply to you:

  • Have an intrauterine device (IUD) currently in place
  • Have a suspected ectopic pregnancy
  • Have certain medical conditions, including anemia, some bleeding disorders, chronic adrenal failure, certain heart or blood vessel diseases, severe liver, kidney, or lung disease, or an uncontrolled seizure disorder
  • Take a blood thinner or certain steroid medicines
  • Can’t reach a healthcare professional by phone or online, or don’t have access to emergency care
  • Have an allergy to the drugs used in a medical abortion

Abortion Comes with Mental Health Risks

Abortion affects every woman differently. However, studies show that at least some women do experience adverse mental health outcomes—like depression, anxiety, shame, and regret—after an abortion.

You’re also more likely to experience a mental health complication if you feel pressured into the abortion, have beliefs that conflict with abortion, or have pre-existing mental health conditions.

Ultrasound Can Help Keep You Safe

Ultrasound is a low-risk scan that can help reveal the essential details you need to know about your pregnancy before seeking an abortion.

For example, an ultrasound will reveal your pregnancy’s gestational age, which you need to know before a medical abortion, as well as your pregnancy’s location (essential for ruling out a life-threatening ectopic pregnancy).
