How the Abortion Pill Works

The abortion pill—also called a medical abortion—is a two-step process. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the hormone needed to sustain a pregnancy (progesterone). The second drug, misoprostol, causes cramping and vaginal bleeding to expel the pregnancy from the uterus.

The FDA has approved this method for use up to 10 weeks of gestation.

Because of the way it triggers heavy vaginal bleeding, the abortion pill carries risks that are important to know ahead of time.

Risks of the Abortion Pill

Some side effects are expected with the abortion pill, such as cramping and bleeding. But there are more serious risks that can affect your health:

  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding – Some women experience bleeding that lasts longer than expected or is heavier than a normal period. Blood clots up to the size of a lemon are considered typical for a medical abortion.
  • Incomplete abortion – If any pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus, you may need a surgical procedure to remove it to prevent infection.
  • Infection – If tissue is left behind or bacteria enter the uterus, it can lead to a severe infection that requires medical treatment.
  • Fever and chills – While a mild fever is common, a high fever may indicate an infection.
  • Digestive system discomfort – Women may experience an upset stomach, in addition to known side effects like diarrhea and vomiting.

Taking the abortion pill without knowing exactly how far along you are or whether your pregnancy is in the uterus (not ectopic) can increase the chances of certain complications.

That’s why an ultrasound is essential before using the abortion pill.

Why an Ultrasound Matters

An ultrasound gives you key information about your pregnancy, including:

  • How far along you are (gestational age)
  • Whether the pregnancy is in the uterus
  • Whether the pregnancy is viable (progressing with a heartbeat)

At First Choice, we provide free limited ultrasounds after a positive pregnancy test to help you learn more about your health and your options.
